Discover the wonderful city of Izmir, located on the western Turkish Aegean coast. Izmir is the third largest city  (after Istanbul and Ankara), and is also one of the oldest cities in Turkey. In ancient times, Izmir was known as 'Smyrna' and was a strategic port and the gateway to Ephesus, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Kemeraltı Bazaar

The Kemeraltı Bazaar was set up by the Ottomans in the 17th century, and is a memorable location to shop for jewellery, souvenirs, spices, local food delicacies, tea gardens and coffee shops. 

Izmir Clock Tower

The city also boasts the astonishing Izmir Clock Tower, constructed from marble, after a design by the celebrated French architect Raymond Charles, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Sultan Abdul Hamid’s II, in 1901.

Agoria Open Air Museum

The Agoria Open Air Museum was first constructed by the ancient Greeks, and then rebuilt by the Romans after being damaged in an earthquake.  Both civilisations valued it as a meeting place and market, and its historical importance is illustrated by the towering marble columns and carved statues which still stand within it. 

Asansör elevator

For a panoramic view, visitors can ride on the century-old Asansör elevator and enjoy breathtaking views of Izmir from a rooftop café.

Izmir Museum of History & Art has one of the best collections of ancient artefacts in  Turkey as well as sculptures from rom ancient Smyrna, Teos, Miletos and Pergamon.
